LOS ANGELES — The Coast Guard rescued four individuals after their vessel ran aground 100 yards west of Beecher’s Bay, Santa Rosa Island, Tuesday.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach operations center received a mayday call over VHF radio at approximately 2:30 a.m., Tuesday from the 36-foot sailing vessel Jazzy. The caller stated that their vessel had ran aground and they were able to make it to shore in a dingy.
A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Forward Operating Base Point Mugu arrived on scene and lowered a rescue swimmer to assist with the individuals.
After refueling, the helicopter crew safely hoisted the four boaters aboard the aircraft and transferred them to Santa Barbara Airport where they were reported to be in good condition.
The Coast Guard urges mariners to always:
- Stay Informed - The public should be aware of weather conditions and monitor the progress and strength of currents through local television, radio and internet. Check the current and expected weather and water conditions before heading out, and be aware that weather conditions can quickly change.
- Wear life jackets while on the water.
- File a float plan with friends, family members and local marinas before heading out. The list should include the number of passengers aboard the vessel, vessel's destination and expected time of return.
- Always have a working marine-band radio on board.
- Carry marine flares on board the vessel.
- Ensure bilge pumps are operational and vessels are secure for heavy winds and rain.
