Coast Guard rescues injured man from Worthington Glacier near Cordova, Alaska

JUNEAU, Alaska — A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew forward deployed to Cordova, Alaska, medevaced an injured man from Worthington Glacier, approximately 50 miles north of Cordova Saturday. 

The Jayhawk crew safely hoisted the 38-year-old male and transported him to Providence Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska.

Watchstanders from Coast Guard District Seventeen command center received a request for assistance from the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center in Anchorage, to rescue the injured person who suffered multiple injuries. Watchstanders notified the duty flight surgeon who recommended medevac and directed the launch of the Jayhawk crew.

“Our helicopter crews train for rescues over water and over land,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Timothy Daughtery, Coast Guard District Seventeen command center command duty officer. “This training prepares them to respond to a variety of situations throughout Alaska.
