MILFORD HAVEN, Va. — The Coast Guard rescued a man aboard a sailboat Thursday 12 miles northeast of Yorktown.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Milford Haven received a report at 9:36 p.m. Wednesday that a man aboard a 33-foot sailboat ran aground near New Point Comfort lighthouse and was unable to refloat his vessel.

A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Station Milford Haven launched at 10:04 p.m. and arrived on scene at 11:37 p.m. The boat crew took the sailboat in tow and towed the boat to Riverwalk Landing Marina in Yorktown, arriving at 3:33 a.m. Thursday.

“Mishaps like this can and do happen, so we caution boaters to be proactive, to review current and future weather conditions and to ensure they have all proper safety equipment,” said Lt. Ashley Dufresne, contingency planner for Sector Hampton Roads.
