Coast Guard responding to pollution incident near Alameda Marina

ALAMEDA, Calif. - Coast Guard and California Fish and Wildlife personnel are responding to a report of a possible fuel spill on the Oakland Estuary in the vicinity of the Alameda Marina, Wednesday.At approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco personnel received a report from the National Response Center of sheening in the water and a strong diesel smell at the Alameda Marina. Alameda firefighters were dispatched and confirmed light sheening in the water at the marina.Personnel from the Coast Guard Sector San Francisco determined Wednesday morning the sheen was still present but could not determine the source.The Coast Guard accessed the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to hire the National Response Corporation, a spill response organization, to commence containment and clean up efforts.The source of the spill and amount of product has yet to be determined. The Coast Guard and California Fish and Wildlife are collaborating to investigate the incident and all possible sources. Additional reports of impacted areas can be made to the Coast Guard or the National Response Center 1-800-424-8802.
