Coast Guard searches for missing college students

January 19, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard continues searching for two missing college students who were swept out to sea near Bonny Doon Beach Monday evening.

At approximately 5:15 p.m. Monday, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received report from CAL Fire and Coast Guard Station Monterey that hikers fell from a cliff at Bonny Doon Beach near the city of Davenport.

A rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco and a rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Monterey were launched. An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast was also issued requesting mariners be on the lookout for the missing hikers.

Santa Cruz City and County fire departments, CAL Fire Engines 3621 and 3761, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department and California State Parks also assisted with search efforts last night.

It was determined three of a group of five college students visiting Bonny Doon Beach were swept out to sea after a wave washed over the rock they were standing on. One out of the three was able to swim safely back to shore with only minor injuries. The other two students remain missing.

The Coast Guard Cutter Tern, an 87-foot Patrol Boat based out of San Francisco, arrived on scene this morning to assist with search efforts. Helicopter crews from Air Station San Francisco are also continuing the search today. California State Parks and CAL Fire are also on scene to assist with search efforts landside along the shoreline.
