Coast Guard, sheriff attempt to resuscitate man near Freeport, Texas

March 12, 2015

HOUSTON — A sheriff's deputy and junior Coast Guard woman provided CPR to a man after a good Samaritan located his body and hailed the two on the beach off Surfside Beach Thursday afternoon; they were not able to save him.

Coast Guard Station Freeport, Brazoria County Sheriffs and Surfside Police were searching for the man after he was reported missing at about 1:30 p.m., by a woman who witnessed the man fall off a paddle board and not resurface. She reported that she saw his board and paddle wash up on shore ten minutes later.

"There is a great professionalism between our partnership with the local police that ensured we were able to find this person," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Jeremy Broussard, a boatswain's mate at Station Freeport. "Unfortunately, despite life saving efforts at the scene, the man was unable to be resuscitated."

Coast Guard Seaman Emily Winn, a junior member at Station Freeport, had responded to the beach to get more detail about the missing man and was helping coordinate with shoreside responders when she was alerted to the man's body nearby. Winn and the sheriff deputy responded with an EMT kit and commenced CPR. Winn provided rescue breaths and they continued until EMS arrived shortly after and took over.

The man was pronounced dead on scene by a Justice of the Peace and was taken to the Texas City medical examiner.
