Coast Guard Station Montauk rescues four from Lake Montauk

August 6, 2016

NEW YORK — Crewmembers from Coast Guard Station Montauk rescued four people in distress in Lake Montauk, Long Island, New York, Saturday.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., watchstanders at Station Montauk received a call from a good Samaritan on shore advising that five people were treading water in the lake directly next to paddleboards and kayaks.

Sector Long Island Sound Command Center was notified and issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast. Station Montauk was already underway and diverted to Lake Montauk.

A Station Montauk boatcrew aboard a 29-foot Response Boat-Small arrived on scene to find four individuals in distress. The crewmembers safely brought them aboard. The rescued individuals informed the crew that the fifth person swam to shore.

The rescued boaters were brought back to Station Montauk to awaiting family members with no medical concerns.

The Coast Guard urges boaters to file a float plan. A float plan is simply letting family and friends know where you are going and your expected time of return. File a float plan with someone who is not getting underway with you and stick to the plan. A float plan assists responders in the search of an overdue boater who may be in distress.
