Coast Guard suspends search for diver 30 miles southeast of Cape Fear, NC

August 26, 2016

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard search for a missing diver, 30-miles off Cape Fear, was suspended at 1:40 p.m. Friday.

The search for the 48-year old man began after his diving equipment reportedly failed, Thursday.

Involved in the search was a 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Coast Guard Station Oak Island, a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium from Station Wrightsville Beach, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City and the Coast Guard Cutters Ibis and Cushing.

Rescuers searched for more than 29 hours and covered approximately 180 square miles.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the missing diver," said Cmdr. Matt Moorlag, Chief of Response at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina.  "Suspending a search effort is always one of our most difficult decisions."
