Coast Guard suspends search for missing college students

January 19, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard suspended search efforts for two missing college students who were swept out to sea near Bonny Doon Beach Monday evening.

After approximately 22 hours of conducting an extensive multi-agency search of a 46-square-mile area, the search was suspended.

Rescue crews assisted were:

  • Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco
  • CAL Fire
  • Coast Guard Station Monterey
  • Coast Guard Cutter Tern
  • Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s office
  • California State Parks
  • Santa Cruz City
  • County Fire Departments

At approximately 5:15 p.m., Monday, the Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received a report from CAL Fire and Coast Guard Station Monterey that hikers fell from a cliff at Bonny Doon Beach near the city of Davenport.

It was determined three of a group of five college students visiting Bonny Doon Beach were swept out to sea after a wave washed over the rock they were standing on. One out of the three was able to swim safely back to shore with only minor injuries. The other two students remain missing. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the missing persons," said Capt. Greg Stump, commander, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. "We want to thank all of our partner agencies who assisted with search efforts for their dedication and service to the public."

Search is suspended pending further developments.
