Coast Guard suspends search for missing Maine man

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The Coast Guard suspended its search Monday for a 23-year-old man who entered the water in Half Moon Cove, near Quoddy Maine, shortly after noon on Sunday.The search for the man, Majik Francis of Pleasant Point, included Coast Guard 29-foot Response Boat crews from Station Eastport, a HC-144 fixed wing aircraft, and a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass. Coast Guard crews searched for nearly 24 hours and covered 193 square miles.Coast Guard crews, assisted by partner agencies searched by air and sea. Assisting agencies included Maine Marine Patrol, the US Border Patrol, the town of Perry and Pleasant Point Fire Departments, and the Quoddy Pilots.Initially, watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Eastport received the report from two survivors who swam ashore after their canoe capsized in the cove. They said a third person aboard, Francis, was last seen clinging to the canoe.None of the three were wearing dry suits or life jackets."This is a very sad moment in the maritime community - and the decision to suspend any search is an extremely difficult one to make," said Capt. Michael Baroody, commander, Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. "Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with the Francis family."
