Coast Guard suspends search in NJ, Md. for missing crew member

August 12, 2015

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a missing crew member Wednesday between Bayonne, New Jersey, and Ocean City, Maryland.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads received notification at approximately 4:30 p.m. from the 600-foot, Marshall Islands–flagged freight ship Ibrahim Dede of a missing crew member.

The crew member was last reported aboard after departing Bayonne, New Jersey. The crew discovered the man was missing while the ship was in transit to its next port.

A Coast Guard Station New York 45-Foot Response Boat crew, a Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City H-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and an Air Station Elizabeth City C-130 Hercules airplane crew searched for the crew member from 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.  They covered the areas along the coast from Bayonne to Ocean City. Coast Guard crews also searched farther north up to New York Harbor and farther south to Chincoteague, Virginia.

The freight ship Ibrahim Dede continued en route to Norfolk International Terminal where it is currently docked.
