Coast Guard suspends search for possible missing aircraft

ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Coast Guard suspended its active search for a possible missing aircraft Monday evening.

11th Coast Guard District watchstanders were notified at approximately 5:30 a.m., Monday by personnel at the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center of a plane that went missing on its transit from Catalina Island to Van Nuys Airport in Van Nuys around 3 p.m. Saturday.

An HC-130 aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento and an MH-65 aircrew from Forward Operating Base Pt. Mugu were launched. Based on information passed to the Coast Guard, crews saturated their search efforts around the island of Catalina spanning more than 1,400 square miles for the Cessna-type aircraft and its crew.

With no signs of any aircraft or anyone in distress, the Coast Guard suspended its active search at approximately 8 p.m., Monday after completing more than 16 hours.
