Coast Guard warns of upcoming winter storm

February 4, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO  — The Coast Guard advises the public to begin making preparations and exercise caution when on and around the water, as heavy rain, strong winds and high surf are predicted to impact northern and central California starting late Wednesday and continuing through Sunday evening.

The National Weather Service issued a small craft advisory beginning Wednesday and remaining in effect through Friday night. High surf and gale-force winds are forecasted to last through the weekend. Rain could be heavy at times especially for coastal ranges and the North Bay with potentially three to six inches by Sunday. Some flooding is also possible for the San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay region for Friday afternoon through Friday night.

The Coast Guard encourages all marinas, vessel owners and operators and the public who live along the water to prepare for the storm. Boat owners are advised to check the status of mooring and anchoring arrangements. Vessels not properly secured during a storm can break free from their moorings, become possible safety hazards to other mariners and can also pose environmental risks, as any fluids or chemicals on board may spill or leak into the water.

"We strongly urge the public to make preparations for the upcoming weather system," said Capt. Greg Stump, commander, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. "During winter storms, the high winds and surf can be very unpredictable and catch mariners off guard.  It is extremely important to be aware of broadcasted weather warnings prior to taking to the water."

The Coast Guard recommends the public keep advised of the storm system through the National Weather Service http://www.weather.gov/sanfrancisco, and monitor channel 16 VHF-FM for the most current safety advisories.
