Discovery of adrift lifejacket off Honolulu prompts Coast Guard response, public's help sought

June 23, 2016

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard is seeking the public's help in identifying the possible user of a lifejacket found adrift off Honolulu Harbor Thursday.

The lifejacket is youth size, orange and labeled as from the vessel Lehua.

Anyone with information that may help identify the user is asked to contact the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center at 808-842-2600.

Watchstanders at the Sector Honolulu Command Center received a report at Thursday morning from the crew of the tug Launch Mana’o who located lifejacket approximately one mile offshore of the harbor.

Sector Honolulu watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast alerting anyone in the area to the situation and diverted a Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from a training mission off Maui to search the area.

There are currently no reported signs of distress or missing persons in the area.

"We contacted the owner of the Lehua, a catamaran moored locally, and learned the vessel was robbed several nights ago,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Esteban Baker, a watchstander with Sector Honolulu. "The lifejacket was among the items reportedly taken, however, that does not rule out the possibility of someone in distress. We’re asking the public and boaters in the area to contact us with any information and keep an eye out for anyone in distress in the harbor area."
