Grand Haven Coast Guard evacuated from station, sector field office due to bomb threat

February 8, 2015

CLEVELAND — Personnel from Coast Guard Station Grand Haven, Michigan, and Coast Guard Sector Field Office Grand Haven have been evacuated after a bomb threat was made against the station.

No injuries to Coast Guard personnel have been reported at this time.

Shortly after 6 a.m. EST, Ottawa County Dispatch notified the command center at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan in Milwaukee that they had received a telephone call from an unknown man claiming he had a bomb in his truck and was going to blow up Station Grand Haven.

While evacuation notifications were taking place, the man drove a truck through the station's gate and broke in the station building where he was subdued by station personnel and taken into custody by Grand Haven Public Safety officers.

Station Grand Haven's search-and-rescue response area is currently being covered by Coast Guard Station Muskegon, Michigan, and Coast Guard Station St. Joseph, Michigan.

The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety reports that Harbor Drive and the boardwalk area have been closed until further notice. Media are asked to avoid Harbor Drive and stage at Grand Haven City Hall in the City Council Chambers.

Updates will be released as they become available.

Questions about the law enforcement response should be directed to Grand Haven Director of Public Safety Jeff Hawke at jhawke@grandhaven.org
