High swim risk for Sheboygan and Ozaukee County beaches on Labor Day

September 4, 2016

MILWAUKEE —The Coast Guard and National Weather Service warn beachgoers of dangerous swimming conditions at Lake Michigan beaches in Sheboygan and Ozaukee counties, Monday.

After seeing an abnormally high number of foul weather related deaths on Lake Michigan this summer, the Coast Guard urges that everyone enjoying time on the lakeshore on Labor Day use extreme caution, especially if entering the water.

Forecasts indicate that south to southeast winds are expected to increase to 15 to 25 miles per hour Monday morning, which will cause wave heights at Lake Michigan beaches to increase to three to five feet.  This will increase the likelihood of dangerous waves and strong currents, especially along structures, piers and near river outlets.

A Beach Hazard Statement emphasizing the High Swim Risk has been issued and is in effect from 9 am until 11 pm Monday.
