HONOLULU — Coast Guard law enforcement officers will enforce a temporary safety zone in the waters of Kaneohe Bay Oct. 16 through 18 in connection with the Kaneohe Bay Airshow.
This safety zone is necessary to safeguard the public and all watercraft from hazards associated with the Navy Blue Angels Squadron performing high powered low flying jet aircraft aerobatics over open water.
The safety zone will encompass an area of the Kaneohe Bay Naval Defense Sea Area and will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day or until cancelled by the Coast Guard Captain of the Port Honolulu, Capt. Shannon Gilreath. No one is authorized to enter the safety zone without the prior permission of the Coast Guard COTP Honolulu.
This zone is established under Title 33 Code of Federal Regulations, Part l 65.7(a). More specifically the zone is in the shape of a box on Kaneohe Bay Naval Defense Sea Area as established by Executive Order No. 8681 of Feb. 14, 1941, in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii.
This box extends approximately 150 yards northeast and 1,000 yards southwest of the Defense Sea Area and is bound by the following points:
21° 26.159' N 157° 47.312' Wthen south to 21° 26.016. N 157° 46.167' W then northeast to 21° 27.943' N 157° 44.953 ' W then west to 21°28.016' N 157° 45.250' W returning to the starting point.
This safety zone extends from the surface of the water to the ocean floor. Transit through Kaneohe Bay, the Sampan Channel, and Kaneohe Bay Entrance Channel will remain open for the duration of this safety zone.
To request COTP approval to transit in the safety zone contact the Honolulu Captain of the Port on VHF channel 16 (156.800 MHz) or 808-842-2600.
The public is advised that 33 CFR 165.23 prohibits any unauthorized person or vessel from entering or remaining in a safety zone. Any person entering the safety zone without the permission of the COTP may be subject to a penalty of not more than $40,000 for each violation or a criminal penalty resulting in imprisonment of not more than 25 years and a fine of not more than $250,000. Offending vessels may also be seized and held liable for any monetary assessments.
