SEATTLE — Coast Guard personnel are overseeing the response to the 65-foot fishing vessel Black Fish discharging diesel after it sank at Makah Marina in Neah Bay, Thursday night.
Responders from the Coast Guard Incident Management Division in Seattle are on scene and National Response Corperation, and Global Diving and Salvage have been contracted to contain and clean the spill.
“Our responders will continue to evaluate and monitor the situation,” said Lt. j.g. Trevor Siperek, assistant chief at the Sector Puget Sound Incident Management Division. “Our goal is to mitigate any environmental damage through a collaborative effort with our agency partners and contracted cleanup personnel.”
The vessel was last reported as actively discharging diesel with an estimated 500 gallons of fuel on board. Marina staff placed a boom around the vessel, which containing the majority of the spill.
The owner reportedly has no insurance or ability to mitigate the pollution threat, so the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund has been opened for $50,000.
There have been no reports of affected wildlife.
