Missing paddle boarder found deceased off St. Augustine

January 11, 2016

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A paddle boarder was found deceased by a Coast Guard search and rescue crew Monday afternoon, approximately 12 miles southeast of St. Augustine Inlet, Florida.

Kenton Miller, 59 years-old, was located by a Coast Guard Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew following a multi-agency search that began Sunday evening.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the loved ones and friends of Mr. Miller during this difficult time," said Cmdr. Doug Stark, chief of response for Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville.

The St. Johns County Sherif's Office received a report from Miller's wife that he did not return by 6 p.m., Sunday as expected. SJSO notified Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville watchstanders of the missing man at approximately 11 p.m., Sunday, after searching Miller's car.

Throughout the search, crews from multiple Coast Guard units, SJSO, and Customs and Border Patrol searched the area in a joint effort to locate Miller.

After Miller was located Monday afternoon, a crew aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium from Coast Guard Station Mayport recovered him from the water. The boat crew transported Miller to St. Augustine City Marina, where SJSO personnel confirmed his identity.

The following assets and agencies took part in the search effort:

  • A 45-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Mayport

  • An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Savannah
