CLEVELAND — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a man after his vessel ran aground near Turtle Island in western Lake Erie Thursday.

The Coast Guard is not releasing the man’s name.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Detroit received a call on VHF-FM channel 16 from a man aboard a 32-foot cabin cruiser stating he was aground near Turtle Island in Maumee Bay.

Due to shallow water depth and on-scene weather, with conditions forecasted to worsen, Coast Guard boat crews were unable to assist.

An aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit was directed to launch aboard a Dolphin helicopter.

Just after 11 a.m., the aircrew arrived on scene, hoisted the man aboard and transported him safely to Toledo Executive Airport in Ohio with no reported injuries.

The reported on-scene weather was air temperatures in the 40s, with sustained 25 mph winds and gusts up to 50 mph.

There have been no reports of pollution from the grounded vessel. A commercial salvage company plans to recover the vessel once the weather subsides.
