ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Kodiak medevaced a 49-year-old man from a cannery near Lazy Bay in the vicinity of Kodiak Friday.

The man was taken to Air Station Kodiak and transferred to waiting emergency medical personnel for treatment.

Coast Guard watchstanders at the District 17 command center in Juneau received a call from the master of the fishing vessel Providence who informed them he was suffering from breathing difficulties and taking his vessel to the Ocean Beauty Cannery in Lazy Bay.  The duty flight surgeon was consulted and recommended medevac by the helicopter crew from Kodiak.

The helicopter crew arrived to the cannery where the man was brought aboard the aircraft for transport.

"The Coast Guard is routinely called upon to conduct medevacs in Alaska," said Lt. Drew Sonetirot, an operations duty officer at Air Station Kodiak. "Our  helicopter crews constantly train to safely transport patients and reduce the time it takes for them to receive medical care."
