PHOTO RELEASE: Coast Guard responding to ship aground on Delaware River

December 26, 2015

PHILADELPHIA — The Coast Guard is overseeing salvage efforts Saturday for a motor vessel that ran aground on the Delaware River.

The vessel was successfully refloated at approximately 1 p.m.

The 622-foot Marshall Islands-flagged motor vessel, Odigitria, ran aground at approximately 4:30 a.m. as it was transiting to Grows Terminal in Morrisiville, Pennsylvania.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia maintained an hourly communications schedule with the Delaware River Pilots regarding the ship’s status.

There were no reported injuries or pollution.

A damage survey is pending. The motor vessel was transporting scrap metal.

“Luckily no one was injured and the event didn’t cause any pollution," said Lt. j.g. Jonas Miller, a command duty officer at Sector Delaware Bay. "We are working to determine the cause of this incident so we can continue to keep vessel traffic safe on the river. Our investigations division is looking into a variety of factors that played into the grounding, including aids to navigation, vessel traffic, and tides and currents.”
