PHOTO RELEASE: Portsmouth, Va., celebrates Coast Guard's 225th birthday

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — U.S. Coast Guard members and Portsmouth city officials celebrated the service’s 225th birthday Tuesday near the city’s waterfront in downtown Portsmouth. Elizabeth Psimas, Vice Mayor of the City of Portsmouth, presented a proclamation recognizing the Coast Guard’s 225 years in service to Coast Guard Vice Adm. Dean Lee, Atlantic Area commander, and Rear Adm. Stephen Metruck, 5th District commander.Lee, Metruck and Psimas led a cake-cutting ceremony before Coast Guard and city personnel enjoyed cake and conversation in celebration of the day.Portsmouth was declared an official Coast Guard City Nov. 17, 2009.
