UPDATE 2: Unified Command continues spill response

September 8, 2016

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard, Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office and ECM Maritime Services continue to respond to an oil discharge near Bay Long, Louisiana, Thursday.

More than 4,400 gallons of oily-water mixture have been recovered.

To date, 147 personnel, 36 boats, 11 skimmers, and more than 12,000 feet of hard-boom have been deployed to contain and recover the product.

Approximately 200 birds have been observed as oiled in the area. Response crews are working to safely capture the oiled wildlife for rehabilitation. Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is conducting shoreline impact assessment. To report impacted wildlife, call 713-705-5897.

Aerial assessments are being conducted of the site and surrounding areas to guide response efforts.

An estimated 5,300 gallons of crude oil was discharged on Monday from a Harvest Pipeline Company pipeline after a subcontractor for Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company tracked over it with a marsh excavator while performing restoration activities.

The incident is under investigation.
