UPDATE: Body of fourth missing boater found in Brunswick River

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The body of the final missing man from a capsized boat was located by a Georgia Department of Natural Resources search crew at approximately 10:53 a.m., Thursday near the Sidney Lanier Bridge.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Charleston command center were initially notified of a capsized boat in the Brunswick River at approximately 7:15 p.m., Wednesday. The initial report, from Georgia DNR, stated the boat carrying four men had capsized in the river near the Sidney Lanier Bridge.

One man was found unresponsive in the water near shore by a Georgia DNR crew and was confirmed deceased by local EMS Wednesday night. A second man was rescued by a Georgia DNR crew Wednesday night. The survivor was found wearing a lifejacket and was treated at the scene by EMS. The body of the third man was located by a Georgia DNR search crew at approximately 7:30 a.m., near the Sidney Lanier Bridge, Thursday morning.

"Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go to the families and friends of all affected by this tragedy," said Capt. Gary Tomasulo, Commander, Coast Guard Sector Charleston. "All agencies involved in the search worked tirelessly to find these men and though it's not the result we hoped for, one man will be able to rejoin his family and carry on the memory of those lost."

Coast Guard crews involved in the search included:

  • a 29-foot Response Boat — Small from Station Brunswick
  • a 45-foot Response Boat — Medium from Station Brunswick
  • an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Savannah
  • A Coast Guard Auxiliary boat crew

Members of Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Glynn County Emergency Management Agency, and Brunswick Police Department also assisted in the search.
