UPDATE: Coast Guard escorts disabled sailing vessel near Monterey

December 1, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard completed an escort and tow of a disabled vessel to Moss Landing early Monday morning after the vessel experienced engine failure.

Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a report Sunday at 1:19 p.m., from Coast Guard Station Monterey of a 45-foot sailing vessel disabled and adrift approximately 40 miles offshore.

The sailing vessel’s crew was able to untangle the fouled propeller and shaft just before the Coast Guard Cutter Pike, an 87-foot Coastal Patrol Boat, arrived on scene.

After proceeding under their own power toward Monterey, the vessel again experienced an engine failure, and to reduce risk to all involved, Coast Guard Cutter Pike placed the vessel in tow.

“We noticed the two passengers were extremely tired,” said Lt. Tim Berry, commanding officer of the Pike. “We decided the safest option would be to put them in tow so they could get some rest, as they hadn’t slept in awhile. We were glad to see them get back safely, and we were able to help out.”

A Coast Guard Station Monterey boatcrew relieved Pike of the tow once near shore and safely moored the vessel at Moss Landing at approximately 7 a.m. Monday.

There were no injuries reported.
