Update: Coast Guard, Honolulu Fire Department rescue 13 boaters near Waikiki

October 24, 2015

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Honolulu receive a mayday call at 6:50 p.m., Oct. 23, 2015, from the master of the 46-foot sailing vessel Boomerang, stating the vessel is hard aground on the reef in the surf zone and were in immediate need of assistance.

The crew of the USCGC Kittiwake and a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Honolulu established a safety zone around the sailing vessel Boomerang while Honolulu Fire Department members reached the vessel via surfboard and safely offload all 13 passengers to shore. An MH-65 Dolphin aircrew from Air Station Barbers Point and an HFD helicopter crew stood by and provided air cover.
