UPDATE: Coast Guard suspends search for missing teen off Holland

June 20, 2016

HOLLAND, Mich. — The Coast Guard suspended its search Monday afternoon for a 16 year old boy who was thrown into the water Sunday when the vessel he was aboard capsized during a high-speed turn in Lake Michigan near Holland.

The boy's name is not being released and there is no Coast Guard imagery available for this search.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family," said Cmdr. Carolyn Moberley, of Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan. "Our helicopter and boats crews have been searching continuously since we received the report of the capsized vessel. It was a very difficult decision to make to suspend our search.”

Sunday evening, Ottawa County 911 dispatchers notified watchstanders in the Sector Lake Michigan Command Center in Milwaukee of a capsized vessel with two people on board about a quarter mile off Holland. The other passenger who was also ejected from the boat was quickly rescued by a local good Samaritan.

Coast Guard boat crews from Station Holland, and Station Grand Haven, Michigan, and helicopter aircrews from Air Station Traverse City, Michigan, and Air Station Detroit searched more than 17 hours and 119 square miles of Lake Michigan, including throughout the night and morning, in spite of adverse weather conditions and found no signs of the missing teen.
