UPDATE: Coast Guard suspends the search for two missing swimmers near Wading River, New York

NEW YORK — The Coast Guard has suspended the search for two missing people in the water near Wading River, New York, Sunday.

The 17-hour search was suspended after officials from the Suffolk County Police Department located two bodies matching the description of the missing males, two-miles west of the Wading River. 

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time,” said Capt. Andrew Tucci, commander of Sector Long Island Sound. “We are deeply saddened by this outcome, and we appreciate the dedicated efforts of everyone involved in the search.”

At approximately 3:30 p.m., Saturday, watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound received a report of three males who slipped into the water while fishing on the rocks near Wading River.

One male was able to grab a hold of a rock and pull himself onto the shore and call for help after he lost sight of the other two men in the water.

Assets and crews involved in the search were:

  • An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod
  • A Coast Guard Station New Haven smallboat crew
  • A Coast Guard Station New London smallboat Crew
  • The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Sitkinak
  • Suffolk County Marine and Air Units
  • Suffolk County Police Department
  • Riverhead Fire Department crews
