UPDATE: Coast Guard Western River Flood Punt Team supports flood response efforts in West Virginia

June 25, 2016

NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Coast Guard Western River Flood Punt Team is assisting the West Virginia State Emergency Operation Center by providing disaster and relief assistance in response to the widespread flooding near Clendenin, West Virginia, Friday.

Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Huntington flood punt team has transported drinking water to 13 households and transported 20 people from isolated areas to safety. Crews also responded to three separate 9-1-1 calls for medical emergencies and transported the subjects while local emergency medical services on board rendered medical assistance.

Flood Punt crews were also able to remove a fallen tree that would have been a hazard to a local roadway when the water levels recede.

“We have been working closely with state, local, and industry partners to respond to multiple situations as they have unfolded in the last 36 hours,” said Cmdr. Tanya Giles, commanding officer of MSU Huntington. “Our number one priority is public safety. We are currently on-scene helping provide transport and medical assistance in Clendenin, West Virginia, and are managing several incidents caused by the high water on the Kanawha River.”
