UPDATE: Neches River partially opened as oil spill cleanup continues

May 30, 2016

BEAUMONT, Texas — The Coast Guard Safety Zone on the Neches River remains in effect Monday, from the Kansas City Southern Railroad Bridge to the north end of the Standolind Anchorage, near light 151.

The Coast Guard will allow deep-draft and barge traffic to transit the safety zone with prior approval from the Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service. Recreational boaters and commercial fishing vessels are not allowed inside of the safety zone.

The Coast Guard, Texas General Land Office, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Jefferson Energy, and multiple contract oil spill cleanup personnel are working together to cleanup the oil remaining in the Neches River.

The response began after a pipeline at the Jefferson Energy Terminal released an estimated 880 gallons of Eagle Ford crude oil into the river Saturday afternoon.
