UPDATE/PHOTOS AVAILABLE: Unified Command continues investigation, response to Potomac River oil sheen

February 10, 2016

BALTIMORE — The Unified Command received results Wednesday of oil samples recovered during response operations in Arlington, Virginia.

Analysis of these samples indicates they contain moderately weathered intermediate petroleum oil.

“The results are being used by the Unified Command as one part of our larger investigative efforts to identify a source and potential responsible party or parties,” said Lt. David Ruhlig, the Unified Command operations section chief.

Ruhlig said identifying a source may take a couple of days, due to the nature of this incident.

“Multiple samples were taken over the course of the response, and those samples are being compared to each other in order to help identify the source of the oil sheen,” said Ruhlig.

Field teams are observing a decrease in impacted wildlife.

Reports of impacted wildlife should be made to the Office of Unified Communications by dialing 311.

Reports of oil should be made to the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802.
