U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft speaks at Area Maritime Security Committee

June 10, 2015

U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft spoke about cyber security at the 2015 Area Maritime Security Committees meeting in Brooklyn, New York, Wednesday.

"Cyber is one aspect of an increasingly complex operating environment for both business and government, said Zukunft.  "It is the latest in a long line of technologies that the maritime industry has used to improve efficiency and provide for the needs of the nation."

The commandant also stated that the Cyber strategy is to ensure safety and security of mariners, vessels, and ports and waterways in the face of cyber-related vulnerabilities.

The Area Maritime Security Committees (AMSCs) brings federal, state, local, and tribal government and industry partners together to collaborate on maritime security. AMSC personnel conduct meetings, create partnerships and networks, share information, conduct training, assess vulnerabilities, and mitigate risks in support of the Area Maritime Security Plan.

"While cyber poses a number of unique risks and challenges, I am confident that we can meet them in a way that benefits the marine industry, protects privacy, and maintains the safety and security of our maritime environment."
