U.S. Coast Guard, Niagara County Sheriff’s Office continue search for man on Niagara River

February 3, 2015

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Rescuers from the Coast Guard, Niagara County Sheriff’s Office and other local agencies continue the search for a man who may have fallen into the Niagara River, Monday night.

The name of the man has not been released and there is no imagery or video from this case.

At around 10:40 p.m., Monday, the Coast Guard received notification from Niagara County of a 51-year-old male from Lewiston, New York, who went missing while shoveling snow earlier that night.

Local authorities conducted a search of the area and found footprints in the snow leading down to the Niagara River.

The Coast Guard, Niagara County Sheriff’s Department, Lewiston Police Department and Lewiston Fire Department searched the area and were unable to locate the man. Lewiston Fire Department searched by boat until ice flow in the river made search conditions too dangerous to continue.

Coast Guard crews from Station Niagara continue to search the shoreline and a helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit will conduct searches Tuesday morning.

For more information please contact Coast Guard Sector Buffalo, New York, Public Affairs Officer Lt. j.g. Brian Hillman at 716-843-9521 or Coast Guard Ninth District Public Affairs Office at 216-902-6020.
