SAULT STE MARIE, Michigan – The Coast Guard and National Park Service rescued three people in Munising Bay, near Munising, Michigan, after their kayaks capsized Tuesday.

The men’s names and hometowns are not being released.

At 4:48 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste Marie received notification from a man reporting that his kayak had capsized in the bay between Sand Point and Minors Castle Point and he had swam to shore, but did not know where the other two kayakers were.

The Sector issued an urgent marine information broadcast to alert mariners in the area to look out for the two missing men.

Searching for the men were a rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Marquette, Michigan, aboard a 45-foot response boat, a rescue aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Michigan, aboard an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter and a rescue crew from the National Park Service aboard a rescue boat.

The NPS rescue crew located one of the missing men clinging to the side of a cliff and vectored the aircrew to his location.

The aircrew hoisted the man into the helicopter and transported him to Munising Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

The last missing man was able to swim to shore and call for help. The rescue aircrew located him and assisted him to the location of the NPS personnel, who further transported him to waiting emergency medical services for treatment for mild hypothermia.
