Video Release: Coast Guard medevacs ailing woman from sailboat off NJ coast

August 3, 2016

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced an ailing woman from a sailboat near Townsend Inlet Tuesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay received a call at 8 p.m. that a 22-year-old female was experiencing severe seasickness approximately 10 miles east of Townsend Inlet aboard the 55-foot sailboat Escapade.

Sector Delaware Bay watchstanders conferred with the 5th District flight surgeon at 8:20 p.m., then launched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Townsend Inlet at 8:45 p.m.

The Station Townsend Inlet crew arrived on scene at 9:10 p.m. and transferred the ailing woman onto the RBM. The RBM crew brought the woman back to Station Townsend Inlet and transferred her to local EMS personnel for treatment.

“We were initially going out for training that night, but it turned into the real thing,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Tyler Fontaine, the coxswain of the RBM crew. “Communication was great, and everybody had a defined role.”
