Coast Guard boatcrew medevacs mariner near Chetco River, Oregon

A Coast Guard boatcrew assists two mariners, one experiencing possible heart attack symptoms, at a pier at Station Chetco River, Friday, July 8, 2016. 

The rescue boatcrew safely towed the boat to safety after the 26-foot vessel was located disabled and adrift near Chetco River jetty in Brookings, Oregon, while the mariner was taken to emergency medical services waiting at Station Chetco River.

BROOKINGS, Ore. — A Coast Guard boatcrew assisted two mariners, one experiencing possible heart attack symptoms, aboard a vessel that was disabled and adrift near the Chetco River jetty in Brookings, Friday evening.

A Coast Guard emergency medical technician aboard a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Station Chetco River, located in Brookings, climbed aboard a 26-foot disabled boat to medically assist the ill mariner while the remaining boatcrew towed the disabled vessel safely to the station where he was transferred to emergency medical service personnel.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Bend received a request for assistance for a disabled vessel drifting toward rocks with two people aboard at approximately 4 p.m.

Shortly after the Coast Guard boatcrew towed the disabled boat from danger, they received a report of a crewmember aboard the boat experiencing symptoms of a possible heart attack. The EMT then climbed aboard the boat, treated and stabilized the mariner during transit to the station where the mariner was transferred to EMS at 5:23 p.m.

“We were fortunate to have another coxswain aboard so I could go over and help,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Raymond Aguilar, a boatswains mate stationed at Chetco River. “With my EMT training, I was able to get vitals and administer oxygen to help stabilize him. When we reached paramedics, he was stable and was taken to the local hospital for further monitoring.”

The weather at the time of the rescue was reported to be cloudy with overcast skies, 10 mph winds and 4-6 foot swells.
