1 dead, 2 injured in boating accident in Cedar Bayou near Baytown, Texas

HOUSTON — A good Samaritan, Chambers County Sheriff's Office-Marine Division personnel and Coast Guard boat and aircrews found one person dead and two injured when responding to a boating accident involving two boats at Devil's Elbow in Cedar Bayou Sunday afternoon.

"Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased and we want to thank the good Samaritan and Chambers County Sheriff's who rescued the six people before we arrived on scene," said Petty Officer 1st Class Phillip Woods, a watchstander at Sector Houston-Galveston.

At 1:50 p.m., a person on one of the boats called Coast Guard Station Galveston watchstanders stating there had been an incident with seven people and two boats and they needed help. Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders launched a Coast Guard Station Houston 29-foot response boat crew and an Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to respond.

The air crew arrive at about 3 p.m. and lowered a swimmer to assess the situation. A good Samaritan rescued four people and the sheriff's boat crew had rescued another two. The seventh person was unresponsive in the water.

The six people were transferred to the Coast Guard boat once they arrived on scene and were taken to Roseland Park, where local EMS, fire department and a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Game Warden were standing by.
