Coast Guard, Alameda, San Mateo County Sheriffs rescue 1 from capsized canoe

SAN FRANCISCO — A 27-year-old male was rescued after his canoe capsized near Oyster Point, Friday afternoon.Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders were notified at 4:34 p.m. by a woman canoeing in a group of 12, that one member of their group capsized their canoe and was missing three miles south of Oyster Point.Coast Guard Station San Francisco's 29-foot Response Boat — Small boatcrew was dispatched to lead the rescue effort, including an aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco and Coast Guard Auxiliary Oyster Point Mobile 3. Coordinating with Alameda and San Mateo County Marine Units, the Coast Guard boatcrew located and rescued the man from the water.

The man showed no signs of injury and was transferred to San Mateo County Marine Unit for transport back to Oyster Point. The mariner rescued was not wearing a life jacket.

The Coast Guard advises mariners to always wear life jackets when boating or participating in water sports."Life jackets greatly increase the chance of survival during maritime accidents which can occur suddenly and without warning. The dispatched responders were able to immediately locate and rescue the person in the water because of the excellent coordination between the local agencies," said Cmdr. Matthew Thompson, chief of response for Sector San Francisco.
