July 12, 2016

WARRENTON, Ore. — A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew out of Air Station Port Angeles assisted the Olympic National Park rangers in the rescue of an injured hiker near Toleak Point, Washington, Tuesday. The 20-year-old man, who suffered injuries from a 15-foot fall, was met at the beach by the helicopter crew and taken to the Olympic Medical Center for further medical care. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound received the notification at 9:00 a.m., for assistance from the park rangers and directed the launch of the helicopter crew. While the Coast Guard's primary responsibility within the National Search and Rescue Plan is maritime rescue operations, the Coast Guard often works with partner agencies including the Air Force and other first responders to conduct inland rescue operations depending on geographical location or complexity of the rescue efforts. Weather at the time of the incident was reported as calm winds and clear skies.
