Coast Guard centennial aircraft to be featured at Miramar Air Show

September 22, 2016

SAN DIEGO - Coast Guard Sector San Diego’s centennial anniversary aircraft is scheduled to be displayed during the Miramar Air Show, at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, in San Diego, Friday thru Sunday.

This year the Coast Guard celebrates its 100 year anniversary of distinguished aviation. In honor of this milestone, the Coast Guard has repainted six MH-60T Jayhawk helicopters in the chrome yellow color of Coast Guard helicopters from the late 1940s and early 1950s. One of these Jayhawks is based at Sector San Diego and actively supports all of the Coast Guard’s missions in Southern California.

This helicopter honors Coast Guard aviators who have bravely served the country in all major U.S conflicts, secured our borders, preserved the safety of life at sea, aided the maritime transportation system, combated smuggling on the high seas, enforced U.S. and international law, safeguarded the nation's fishing stocks and protected the delicate maritime environment.

“We’re proud to celebrate 100 years of Coast Guard aviation as part of the Miramar Air Show with a variety of fixed and rotary wing aircraft on display,” said Capt. Joseph Buzzella, commander, Coast Guard Sector San Diego. “Our centennial themed helicopter serves as a reminder of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while executing Coast Guard missions and our proud aviation heritage.”

The Coast Guard’s static display will be located at the western corner of the Miramar aircraft exhibits. A Coast Guard C-27 Spartan aircraft, Coast Guard Auxiliary Beechcraft Baron aircraft, Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team 25-foot fast response boat, Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team trailerable aids to navigation boat and other assets and their crews will also be on display.
