Coast Guard closes seasonal boat stations, response capabilities remain intact

September 11, 2015

BOSTON — The Coast Guard closed Station Scituate Thursday and Coast Guard Station Block Island Wednesday for the end of the summer boating season, and plan to reopen both seasonal stations Memorial Day 2016.The seasonal station crews will report back to their year-round Coast Guard stations, Station Point Allerton, in Hull, and Station Point Judith, in Rhode Island.

During the off-season, Station Block Island and Station Scituate close due to reduced recreational traffic. Both stations transfer their response capabilities back to the parent stations.

Station Point Judith is located 12 nautical miles northeast of Block Island and provides search and rescue assets to Rhode Island Sound, Block Island Sound, and waters offshore up to 50 miles south of Rhode Island.

Station Point Allerton is located in historic Hull, in the First Coast Guard District. Station Point Allerton's history and traditions date back to the earliest days of the Massachusetts Humane Society when Captain Joshua James was the original Surfman and Station keeper.
