Coast Guard conducts multiple rescues in Bay Area

February 22, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard conducted multiple rescues, recovering a total of six people from the water late Sunday morning.

At 10:53 a.m. Sunday, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Command Center watchstanders received report of a 15-foot sailing vessel capsizing near Tiburon. The two occupants were able to self-right the vessel, but the mast was broken leaving them unable to sail the vessel.  A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew was launched from Coast Guard Station Golden Gate, and the sailing vessel was placed in tow.

During the tow, the Coast Guard received report of an outrigger canoe with six people taking on water in a commercial shipping channel between Station Golden Gate and Crissy Field in San Francisco.

The Coast Guard boatcrew temporarily dropped the tow of the 15-foot sailing vessel, diverted to the scene and recovered all six individuals from the water within 20 minutes. They were then transported to Crissy Field for further evaluation by emergency medical personnel.

The 15-foot sailing vessel was later towed to Gas House Cove by another crew from Station Golden Gate.
