Coast Guard Cutter Line ensures delivery of vital home heating oil to Port Jefferson

March 2, 2015

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard Cutter Line helped facilitate the delivery of 60,000 barrels of home heating oil on Saturday and another 78,000 barrels on Sunday to Port Jefferson, New York.

Without the deliveries made during this weekend, more than 1 million customers throughout the Long Island area would have been without home heating oil.

The Line's efforts breaking ice in Oyster Bay earlier that week allowed Commander Oil Corp to receive 24,000 barrels of oil Thursday. Another 24,000 barrels is scheduled for delivery today. Commander Oil supplies approximately 40 thousand homes in Western Suffolk County and Central Nassau County on Long Island.

“The Coast Guard Cutter Line and her crew displayed an unwavering devotion to the public during D1's Operation RENEW (Reliable Energy for Northeast Winters) over the past 5 days while assigned to the Sector Long Island Sound AOR,” said Chief Warrant Officer Tim Woody. “Their domestic icebreaking efforts helped facilitate the delivery of hundreds of thousands of barrels of home heating oil to the shores of Long Island and Connecticut.”

The 65-foot cutter is based out of Bayonne, New Jersey, and has been operating in Long Island Sound as part of the Coast Guard’s Operation RENEW. This is the Coast Guard's region-wide effort to ensure Northeast communities have the security, supplies, energy, and emergency resources they need throughout the winter.
