Coast Guard, good Samaritan save three from capsized boat near Stratford, Connecticut

June 14, 2015

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard rescued three people Sunday after their boat capsized near Stratford, Connecticut.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., a good Samaritan called the Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center and said three people were in the water near the mouth of the Housatonic River.

Coast Guard crewmembers from Aids to Navigation Team Long Island Sound were nearby aboard a 26-foot boat and diverted to the scene. They arrived and found two mariners clinging to the hull of the boat. The third was rescued by the good Samaritan.

None of the three were wearing life jackets.

The rescue crew brought all three safely aboard and transported them to Milford Police Department who took them to Milford Harbor.

“These are three extremely lucky mariners, who should have all been wearing life jackets,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Dustin James, an operations specialist at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound. “This may have ended much worse if help wasn’t nearby.”
