March 23, 2016

WARRENTON, Ore. — A Coast Guard helicopter crew medevaced an injured 16-year-old teen after he reportedly fell 150 to 200 feet while hiking near the Multnomah Falls, Wednesday.

The MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria in Warrenton safely transported the hiker to waiting medical personnel at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.

An off duty paramedic and emergency room doctor happened to be hiking in the area and were able to stabilize the teen on the cliffside.

“Outstanding efforts on behalf of the two off-duty medical professionals and the help they provided until we were able to get on scene,” said Chief Petty Officer Justin Urbano, command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River. “Their actions in cooperation with our air crew and local sheriff’s office personnel ensured our ability to get the injured hiker to care he needs.”

Watchstanders at Sector Columbia River received the request for assistance at 1:20 p.m. from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

The teen reportedly suffered head trauma and a possible spinal injury.
