Coast Guard helps boaters in distress off South Carolina coast

December 27, 2014

CHARLESTON, SC — The Coast Guard responded to a vessel taking on water Saturday, 48 miles southeast of Folly Beach, South Carolina.

No injuries were reported, and the vessel did not sink.

Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Charleston command center received a report of the situation at 4:10 a.m., from the captain of the 37-foot commercial fishing vessel Just Right. The report stated the vessel was disabled and the crew was unable restart its main engines. The boat was also reported to be taking on water from a leak in the stern from the rudder. The vessel was able to dewater using the installed bilge system, however the batteries used to run the pump were running low.

The command center launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Savannah, Ga., to the scene at 11:04 a.m. The helicopter crew arrived on scene at 12 p.m., and deployed their rescue swimmer and a dewatering pump. The crew aboard the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Yellowfin was also launched to the scene. Upon arrival the crew assessed the situation and provided a jump-start to the Just Right's batteries. The fishing vessel is expected to get underway again and transit to Murrells Inlet.

It is unknown at this time what caused the vessel to become disabled.
