HONOLULU — Representatives from the 14th Coast Guard District, Coast Guard Base Honolulu and Mortenson Federal Contracting Group participated in a dedication ceremony, Friday, of a new building at Coast Guard Base Honolulu to support the scheduled 2017 arrival of the Coast Guard's new Fast Response Cutters.

Remarks were presented by Rear Adm. Cari Thomas, 14th Coast Guard District commander.

The building received a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony. The Coast Guard’s Acquisition Directorate works to provide adequate physical infrastructure to support new cutters and ensures that cutters are smoothly integrated into the Coast Guard fleet for lifecycle support and maintenance. With this building, the service has ensured that the shore side infrastructure was in place before the first Fast Response Cutter arrived.

The new building will provide maintenance and logistics support for the cutters, which are scheduled to replace the aging fleet of 110-foot patrol boats currently serving the Pacific region. Nine fast response cutters are currently in service in the Carribbean.

The Coast Guard’s Office of Civil Engineering provided project planning and oversight, and the Facilities Design and Construction Center at Norfolk, Va., executed the construction for the 8,300 square foot building. Of the materials used to construct the building, 20 percent was made from recycled content and another 20 percent was locally sourced.

The Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutter is a new Coast Guard patrol boat that is capable of deploying independently to conduct missions that include port, waterways and coastal security; fishery patrols; search and rescue; and national defense.
