Coast Guard to honor Dr. Olivia Hooker in historic building renaming ceremony

NEW YORK — Media are invited to attend a Coast Guard ceremony to honor Dr. Olivia Hooker, Thursday, at Coast Guard Sector New York, located on Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, N.Y. 10305.

 Media wishing to attend the ceremony should arrive at Coast Guard Sector New York no later than 2:30 p.m. Thursday to be granted access to the installation. Media wishing to attend must RSVP with Charles Rowe, Sector New York public affairs officer, at 718-354-2359.

 Who: Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft, Rear Adm. Linda Fagan, Coast Guard 1st District commander, retired Rear Adm. Stephen Rochon, Capt. Gordon Loebl, commander, Coast Guard Sector New York.

 What: A ceremony to officially rename the Coast Guard Sector New York Galley in honor Dr. Olivia Hooker, 100, the first African-American woman admitted into the U.S. Coast Guard in 1945.

 When: 3 p.m., Thursday, March 12, 2015.

 Where: Coast Guard Sector New York, located on Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, N.Y. 10305.

 Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft is scheduled to preside over a ceremony to officially rename the Coast Guard Sector New York Galley in honor Dr. Olivia Hooker, 100, who holds the distinction of being the first African-American woman admitted into the U.S. Coast Guard in 1945.

 Dr. Hooker, joined the service as a SPAR (Semper Paratus, Always Ready), the acronym used for female service personnel during World War II.
