Coast Guard honors local heroes

May 21, 2015

New Haven, Connecticut – The Coast Guard honored the actions of two local heroes during the spring Search and Rescue Council meeting, April 28, 2015, at the Riverhead New York Fire Department.

Cmdr. Jonathan Theel, Chief of Response for Sector Long Island Sound, presented the Meritorious Public Service Award to Capt. Garrett Moore of Riverhead, New York, and Capt. Bill Barker of Mattituck, New York, for their “admirable actions” and “exemplary commitment to public service” on Sept., 15th, 2014.

While on duty for Sea Tow, Capt. Barker responded to a report of a reckless speedboat in Greenport Harbor, New York, with six passengers who had fallen into the water.  Capt. Moore, a fellow off-duty Sea Tow employee, heard the distress call and volunteered to assist.

Once on scene, the two men confirmed that all six passengers had been rescued from the water.  The unmanned speedboat continued travelling through the water at speeds in excess of 20 mph.  Capt. Barker was able to get next to the vessel, leap aboard and bring it under control.

By willingly placing the safety of others above their own, Capt. Moore and Capt. Barker prevented the vessel from striking another vessel or a person in the water and kept it from causing significant damage to the harbor infrastructure and marine environment.

“Their actions were above and beyond their charge as licensed mariners to assist others in distress,” said Theel. “I am honored to recognize their heroic efforts”.
